Attaching a scholarly journal article

Hypothesis

1) Make sure it is a scholarly/peer-reviewed journal article (no magazines, books, random web pages, etc.). If in doubt, either choose from the list or send your article (in a timely manner) and I will confirm or not that it is what we are looking for. (If not a scholarly peer-reviewed journal article 0 points can be earned.)

2) Make sure the article is related to the chapter.

3) Current (no later than 2013) is preferred but not required.
f you have never used a scholarly journal before, if you don’t know the difference between a magazine and a scholarly journal, or if you want to review information about scholarly journals, go to http://www.miracosta.cc.ca.us/home/gfloren/Scholar.htm#top

Also, refer to APA folder in the “HELP!!” link for assistance with finding a journal and writing in APA style.

The goal of the journal article review is to familiarize you with scholarly research in psychology and how research studies are conducted and described.

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Read article
  2.  Type a minimum two page APA style paper. Along with the guidelines below, you must also include a cover page and reference page. An abstract is not required.
  3.  You must follow the guidelines below. Please supply all of the information requested below concerning the paper you read.
    1.  Please write your paper using appropriate heading levels as found in the APA manual.
    2. Whenever you refer to the study in your paper, you must cite/reference the information from the article in APA style.
    3. Include in your review:
        1. State the hypothesis of the study. (Remember, a hypothesis makes a specific prediction. A hypothesis is NOT a statement of purpose.)
        2. Hypothesis

      1. Summarize the information that was available to the researchers that prompted them to do the study (Tell me WHY the study was done.) Describe the method and subjects used. There are 2 parts to this section.
        1.  Identify the research method used in the study (experiment, naturalistic or laboratory observation, case study, survey, psychological test):
          1. if the study was experimental research, then identify the independent and dependent variables and the control and experimental groups
        2. Describe specifically what the authors did; how he, she or they conducted this experiment in a step-by-step description. Do not include statistical methods.
        3. Hypothesis
  4. What were the most important results of the study? What information was obtained? Do not confuse this with conclusions of the study. The results sections often describe the outcome in statistical terms that you may not understand, please just skip over the statistics and give a brief summary of what happened in your own words (do NOT just quote what the authors said….I want you to try to put this in your own words). NO QUOTES ALLOWED IN THIS SUMMARY. Including quotes will result in a max of half credit.
  5. What was the conclusion of the study? Did it support or refute the original hypothesis? Explain the meaning and/or implications of the conclusion. Again, be sure to use your own words.
  6. In addition to the review, Include a one-paragraph personal reaction that includes but is not limited to things like:
    • What did you learn from the article?
    • What did you like/dislike about the article?
    • What questions for you did the article create/answer? Explain.
    • What kinds of ideas did this article make you think about?
    •  Anything else you want to share after reading the article.
    • Hypothesis
  7. Include a reference (in APA style. Example:

Gibson-Dias, J., & Gibson, Q. M. (2014). Welcome to the personality crisis: Prepping soldiers for return.  Journal of Personality, 16(13), 1-5. doi:  10.1002/bip.20596
