Achievement of Desire by Richard Rodriguez

English

Writing Prompt:

In “The Achievement of Desire,” Richard Rodriguez tells the story of his education that, as he writes, “connects [the life of] the boy to the man” (194). Rodriguez’s journey, however, is not a straightforward one. Instead, his essay brings out both the positive and negative consequences of his educational experiences.

In your paper, consider how Rodriguez views his educational success in terms of what he has lost in your response to the following question: What is the value of education for Rodriguez?

You may consider one or more of the following topics that Rodriguez addresses in his chapter to help you brainstorm and formulate a thesis statement for your paper: the idea of the ‘scholarship boy’; Richard Hoggart’s book, The Uses of Literacy; the cultural differences between home and school; how he learns to read; his reflections on his parents and family; OR a topic of your choice
