This essay proceeds in four steps.

Part I gives a brief explanation of what I intend to discuss how the GATT/WTO was established and its working procedures.
Part II outlines the problems associated with WTO dispute settlement remedies within the context of an institution lacking enforcement power and considers possible improvements to them.

Part III discusses the purpose of WTO dispute settlement remedies because this purpose is an essential requirement for designing effective remedies.
Finally, part IV offers suggestions to improve the remedies currently available through the WTO dispute settlement system and highlighting the implications for proposed future reforms dealing with transparency and developing country participation.
